What Does It Mean to Be a Confessional Baptist Church?
In a world where beliefs are constantly shifting and churches often define themselves by trends or personalities, the phrase Confessional Baptist may sound unfamiliar to many people. Yet for centuries, confessional churches have sought to ground their faith and practice firmly in the truth of God’s Word. So what does it actually mean to be a Confessional Baptist church?
At its core, a Confessional Baptist church is a church that believes the Bible is the final authority for faith and life and joyfully summarizes its biblical convictions through a historic confession of faith. Rather than creating doctrine based on cultural preferences or personal opinions, confessional churches openly declare what they believe Scripture teaches.
Historically, many Confessional Baptist churches identify with the Second London Baptist Confession of Faith of 1689. This confession was written to clearly articulate Baptist convictions rooted in the doctrines of the Protestant Reformation. It serves as a theological summary—not as a replacement for Scripture, but as a faithful guide to understanding it.
Being confessional means we value doctrinal clarity. We believe truth matters because truth reveals who God is, what Christ has accomplished, and how sinners are saved. In a time when many people view doctrine as divisive or unimportant, confessional churches believe sound doctrine actually protects and strengthens the church. Biblical truth leads to worship, discipleship, unity, and spiritual maturity.
As Baptists, we hold several distinct convictions. We believe baptism is for believers who personally trust in Jesus Christ, and that baptism is meant to publicly testify to faith in Him. We also believe the local church is to be governed according to the principles laid out in Scripture, with Christ Himself as the head of the church.
Confessional Baptists are also deeply gospel-centered. Our theology is not merely intellectual or academic. Everything we believe flows from the good news that Jesus Christ lived, died, and rose again to save sinners. We believe salvation is by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. Because of this, our worship, preaching, discipleship, and mission are centered on the finished work of Jesus.
Additionally, confessional churches value expository preaching—the careful preaching and teaching of God’s Word verse by verse and passage by passage. We believe God’s people grow best when nourished by the Scriptures rather than human ideas or motivational messages. The goal of preaching is not entertainment, but faithful proclamation of Christ from all of Scripture.
Finally, being a Confessional Baptist church means we are connected to a rich historical faith. Christianity did not begin with us, and we do not believe every generation must reinvent the church. We stand alongside faithful believers throughout church history who treasured God’s Word, proclaimed the gospel, and sought to live for the glory of Christ.
In the end, being a Confessional Baptist church simply means we desire to be a church shaped by Scripture, anchored in truth, centered on Christ, and committed to making disciples for the glory of God.
